Entrance on Buitenkant Street. The castle was built 350 years ago to defend Cape Town, but has never been used for anything other than a point of interest.
The castle is South Africa's oldest building, built 1666-1679. The changing of the guard takes place Monday-Friday at 12 noon. There also a dolphin pool and a museum. The castle is still the headquarters of the army command in western South Africa. Guided tours daily, every hour, at 10-15, during the high season from November to March every half hour.
